Windball cricket facility for Tobago
The Nationwide Sports League (NSL) will soon build a windball cricket facility in the sister isle, Tobago as they try to popularise the game. President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the NSL, Lincoln Persad said he had promised Tobago cricketers that he would build the facility once the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) provides the land. Last weekend a large crowd turned up at the Scarborough Cultural Complex for the opening of the Radio 90.5FM/NSL windball cricket tournament. The series which is in its sixth year, will be making its debut in Tobago this season. Whimp Cricket Club of Scarborough won the opening five overs competition last week defeating Yats Meat and Beat in the finals. Batting first Yats Meat and Beat made 25 runs for the loss of two wickets in three overs. Paced by an unbeaten 19 from Neil Potts, Whimp Cricket Club made 26 for two in only two overs.
For their efforts Whimp collected $300 and a trophy, while Yat’s Meat and Beat got $200. In the women’s final, Stars defeated Tobago Race Club to claim their $300 first prize. However Tobago Race Club was able to take away the march past parade title to make amends. The most valuable player award on the men’s side on the opening day went to Potts, while in the female competition Ann Marie McEwing prevailed. Lennox Smith, secretary of Sports and Youth Affairs in the THA complimented the NSL in making the competition truly national by including Tobago. He added that the THA will be working with the Tobago Umpires and the NSL to make the 2004 season really successful.
