Hingoo murder trial aborted

A HIGH Court judge yesterday aborted the trial of a Diego Martin woman charged with the murder of her lover, because he estimated that the trial would go beyond the month of July. The trial had started exactly two weeks ago, on July 2. Justice Prakash Moosai, who is expected to be out of the jurisdiction for “personal reasons” at the end of the month, yesterday concluded that the evidence of 20 State witnesses could not “realistically” be heard before then, and discharged the jury. A new September 20 trial date has been set. The accused, Alisha Chunu, was before Moosai at the Port-of-Spain Third Criminal Court charged with the murder of businessman Menon Hingoo. Hingoo’s body was found floating in Carenage waters on May 21, 2002, 14 days after he had filed a lawsuit against Chunu claiming $98,000. Chunu, 29, of Rich Plain in Diego Martin, was represented by attorney Sophia Chote instructed by Nadia Astraph. State attorneys Nalini Singh and Debbie Ann Bassaw prosecuted.
