TT’s Scoon wins Caribbean squash crown
GEORGE TOWN: TRINIDAD and Tobago’s Joanna Scoon was in winning form at the Caribbean Squash Championships staged at the South Sound Squash Club on Sunday night. Scoon beat Guyana’s Chantelle Fernandes in the Girls’ Under-17 final to give her country their first title at the championships. Bermuda secured two titles when Robert Maycock and Kelly Barnes won their age group finals. Maycock outplayed Jamaican Bruce Burrowes for the Boys’ Under-15 title, and 11-year-old Barnes captured the Girls’ Under-13 crown ahead of Guyana’s Kayla Jeffrey. In the Boys’ Under-15 decider, Maycock dominated Burrowes for a 9-2, 9-1, 9-0 victory in a lopsided match, while Barnes outplayed Jeffrey 9-4, 7-9, 9-2, 7-9, 9-1 in a tense battle.
Guyana’s 2003 Boys’ Under-17 champion Damien DaSilva stepped up to the senior division and won the Under-19 title 3-2 over Jamaican David Patterson, after eliminating Barbadian Rhett Cumberbatch in the “semis”. In other ‘finals, Jamaica’s Chris Binnie defeated Guyana’s Kristian Jeffrey 3-1 for the Under-17 crown, and Diarra Venner, of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), claimed the Under-13 title. The Cayman Islands’ Chantelle Day copped the Girls Under-19 title 3-2 over Barbadian Bo Harris, who had eliminated defending champion Andrea King of Guyana 3-0 in the semi-finals. The other Girls title went to Barbadian Cheri-Ann Parris who got past past Samantha Hennings, of the Cayman Islands, in the Under-15 final. The tournament was on a rest day yesterday and team competition begins today.
