Aldred art reflects TT’s vibrancy

Although now married and living in Stamford, Lincolnshire, UK, Aldred has not lost touch with her native land. The light of the tropics and vibrant colours dominate her work - the most colourful of the five selected for publication being “Market Women” from the heaps of fruit and vegetables, the colours of the vendors’ skirts, headties and umbrellas, the impressions of the fruit with impasto highlighting the rich sheen on - are they apples, or large limes? the green bananas and plantains. This piece is a riot of colour and light.

In contrast, “North Coast II” is sombre, the breaking waves being the only source of light reflected from the sky above. It’s not easy to determine the time of day; it could be early morning (but well past sunrise) or late afternoon. The ocean stretches seemingly forever …

“Pirogues 2” is a quiet, thoughtful, unpretentious painting of two pirogues, the play of light and shadow adding interest to this piece.

“Water Lilies 2” is beautiful, calm, serene; the lilies take pride of place with the reflection of the sky in the water in the foreground contrasting with the dark green of the water in the background forming a carpet of muted, quiet colour - when compared with “Market Women”.

Finally we come to the joyous “Carnival” with a character in flowing white robes, accented with a green and yellow headtie and scarf - and oversized shades, glorying in the music and rhythm as he chips along the street.

Aldred’s exhibition of recent works continues at Horizons Art Gallery until Saturday.
