Five Rivers football set to counter ills of community
The Five Rivers Football League will open today at 1 pm with a march past involving the 16 teams at Prime Minister’s Park, Fifth Street, Five Rivers. The competition which offers $60,000 in prizes promises to act as a counter measure to youth deviance. The Five Rivers Sport and Cultural Foundation has revived the league in view of what it describes as a decline in discipline in the village. According to a release from the foundation: “The NBA and West Indies Cricket can never touch the lives and character in our youth to the extent that an organised community league can.”
In challenging the youth to build team structures, football programmes and organisations to be successful in the competition, the foundation asserts that the participants will learn problem-solving techniques, build teamwork, develop conflict resolution skills and nurture respect for others and the rules of the games drawing them away from aberrant behaviour. Two exhibition matches, DJ music and live steelband performances will complete the evening
