TT beaten with one ball to spare

KINGSTON: Jamaica ensured they would be a new winner of this year’s TCL West Indies Under-19 limited-overs championship, when they completed a one-wicket victory over defending double crown champions Trinidad and Tobago at Chedwin Park yesterday. Needing 199 for victory and a place in the final today against Barbados, the Jamaicans got the 10 runs required for victory in the final over with one ball to spare. Morgan struck nine off the first three balls of the over, bowled by Young West Indies left-arm spin bowler Rishi Bachan, including a huge six before Alton Beckford took a single off the fifth ball to bring victory to his team. Morgan, who captured three wickets for 48 runs when TT batted, ended on 34 not out.

The Jamaicans made a brisk start in search of victory with Yannick Elliot hitting the top score of 51 and Young West Indies opening batsman Xavier Marshall making 29, as they posted 79 for the first wicket. After they were separated, there were useful contributions from the lower-order, including 24 from all-rounder Ziggy Levy, who helped to propel Jamaica forward. Bachan still ended with figures of three wickets for 24 runs from 9.5 overs. TT, choosing to bat, were indebted to solid batting Manoj Sirju with the top score of 57, Aaron Ragoonath, undefeated on 37 not out, William Perkins with 36, and Petrock Nicholas with 31 in their total of 198 for eight from their allotment of 50 overs.
