Works Ministry not moving Breakfast Shed

CONSTRUCTION of an additional lane along Wrightson Road within the next two months, does not mean the Breakfast Shed’s removal from the Port-of-Spain waterfront is imminent. This was the assurance given yesterday by Works and Transport Minister Franklyn Khan. Speaking with reporters at his Ministry’s Port-of-Spain headquarters, Khan said the project will be done in two phases — Colville Street to St Vincent Street (Phase one) and St Vincent Street to Sea Lots (Phase two). He said the Works Ministry will be required to acquire between three and five metres along this strip of road.

“We are encroaching three to five metres west bound which means Udecott (the Urban Development Company of TT) and the Port will have to give up some land. However the issue of the removal of the Breakfast Shed has nothing to do with the road, it has do with the redevelopment of the waterfront for the FTAA headquarters. That is being handled by Udecott,” the Minister said. Last week, Planning and Development Minister Camille Robinson-Regis said no decision has been taken to remove the Breakfast Shed from the port. She said Udecott is “a wholly-owned State company which reports through the Minister of Planning and Development to the Cabinet.”
