Protest versus progress
THE EDITOR: Fighting progress with protest, the Woodbrook Residents Committee threatens the “blocking of roads and burning tyres;” because Home Construction Limited’s “flouting of all the rules of decency and the contamination of the environment.” What a strange kind of logic! (Newsday Aug 7, ’04). They evidently have not stopped to consider non-protesting fellow residents, nor that not only must HCL have leased/bought the land that is now the site of One Woodbrook Place from City Council, but they must also have been granted planning permission. There was a lot of press coverage for many months before, and also a public meeting with residents. It would be difficult to imagine a project of this size to be minus dust and noise in the initial stages. When the dust has finally settled, Woodbrook will see another stride forward into the Brave New World of 2020.
