Police Chief promises to get tough with criminals
Members of the public — outraged over the senseless murders, kidnappings and robberies — have been assured by Police Commissioner Trevor Paul that the Police Service has begun a more aggressive approach to fighting crime. The concerned commissioner, accompanied by members of his executive, hosted a press briefing yesterday at the Police Administration Building to assure the public that new anti-crime initiatives will be carried out with the rule of law. “Your call for action will be carried out, but rest assured that our actions, which may appear to be aggressive, will be carried out with the rule of law in mind,” said the police chief. He said while he could not divulge details of the new aggressive approach, citizens should exercise patience and wait to see the results. The commissioner noted that the fight against crime can only be successful with the support of the public.
Up to yesterday 161 persons were murdered for the year — three of whom were police officers. According to the commissioner, perpetrators of the inhumane acts have demonstrated no regard for human lives and he said he understood clearly the outrage of citizens. He said he had received many calls from citizens at all levels expressing outrage at the level of criminal activity. “Law-abiding citizens are losing patience and demanding stronger police action to deal with the criminal elements responsible for their heinous crimes,” said Paul. He added that the kidnappings of Vijay Persad, Rodney Deosaran and the murder of Insp Edward Williams are despicable acts that display the kind of callousness of criminals in our society. “This criminal activity is now traumatising every law-abiding citizen of this country,” the top cop said. The commissioner assured the public that he would “leave no stone unturned in bringing these perpetrators to justice.”
