Trainer Dulal-Whiteway dies
HORSERACING lost another friend with the death of owner-trainer Andrew Dulal-Whiteway. Dulal-Whiteway died on Sunday from a massive heart attack at the age of 46. The affable trainer who has three runners under his charge, was last seen on the job at Santa Rosa Park on Sunday supervising the preparation of Golden Honour, whom he was pointing for a race on Saturday. Dulal-Whiteway left the racecourse for home soon after. He complained of feeling ill later in the afternoon and was rushed by ambulance to the Arima Hospital where he died. Dulal-Whiteway was the seventh member of a family of eight and was the younger brother of Neal and Massy Group of Companies chief executive officer Bernard.
He was a computer specialist contracted to the Telecommunication Services of Trinidad and Tobago. Bernard said yesterday, funeral arrangements have not yet been finalised. “Hopefully we are looking at Thursday,” he said. “A service is being planned for the Roman Catholic Church on Harris Promenade before cremation at the Belgrove’s Funeral Home in San Fernando.” Andrew became involved in horseracing in the 80s and was granted his trainer’s badge by the Trinidad and Tobago Racing Authority in 1989. He started out with a small string owned by brothers Bernard and Louis, and also condition a number of runners for the late Nazir Ahamad at Union Park.
His love for horses was so great that he got more deeply involved and took out his owners’ licence in 1992. Seaward Bound gave the jovial trainer his first taste of success at Union Park, Marabella, and Murphy’s Law who held off Chief Commander to win the Chevrolet event over 1200 metres at Santa Rosa Park, Arima, on Emancipation Day, was his last. High Court Justice Wendell Kangaloo, also a racehorse owner and a close friend of the Dulal-Whiteway family, said he was deeply saddened by the news of Andrew’s death. Kangaloo said: “Racing has lost a good horseman. “We studied at the University of Toronto together. He was very knowledgeable and knew how to bring his runners right for a particular race.”
