Thanks for the glory, George

THE EDITOR: My sincere congratulations to George Bovell III on his remarkable success in winning the bronze medal during the 200m IM at the Olympic Games in Athens. Having viewed the game live on television I was very pleased to see the determination and effort put forward by this outstanding athlete in his quest to achieve greatness and bring glory to our country. Being the first sporting individual in the English-speaking Caribbean to earn a medal in swimming at the highest level, Mr Bovell has joined the ranks of all-time sporting heroes in our region. George Bovell’s accomplishment in Athens has demonstrated the wealth of talent and ability possessed by our sportsmen and women in TT. His discipline and perseverance have brought triumph and honour to our country at a time when these values are so desperately needed in our midst.

Bovell’s record-breaking achievement presents another opportunity for our local swimming bodies to address the existing problems that beset the sport. A collaborative effort involving the ministries of Education and Sport and Youth Affairs and all concerned should be pursued in paving the way for up-coming swimming athletes. More swimming pools must be constructed and improvement to existing facilities should be embarked upon. Moreover I hereby suggest that the sport itself be introduced on a phase by phase basis in our primary schools in the physical education curriculum. Provide our children with an extra avenue for self-development and that chance for rising to the highest of performers from an early stage.

Bovell’s outstanding performance is a perfect example for our youth to pursue their goals in any field of human endeavour with dedication and discipline. In hailing his achievement, I trust that it will be an inspiration to our region’s young aspiring athletes to strive for excellence. It’s a strong lesson to the youths descending into an abyss of destruction. Think and act positive and only great things will be attainable. To all of Trinidad and Tobago let’s celebrate this memorable, victorious period in our nation’s history. Well done George Bovell. We are proud of you.
