Chase Veterans put opponents in b-ball school

Brian Chase Academy Veterans and Unit Trust Maloney Pacers continue to pile up titles in the 2004 Eastern Community Basketball League. The Veterans added the Second Division Knock-Out title to their season’s resume after beating Pacers 61-54 in the final on Saturday at the Maloney Indoor Sport Arena. They had already captured the Second Division League title on merit of a remarkable unbeaten run and continued that streak in the final against Pacers who were the defending champions. Derek “Cornbread” James led all scorers with a match-high 18 points while Patrick “KK” Joseph had 16 and Chris Hudlin put in 13 points as the Veterans schooled their opponents. Pacers had Derek Williams with 16 points and Kenrick Bernard on 14 on the scorecard.

In the earlier matches on Saturday Police booked their sport in the Women’s Division Knock-Out final with a slim 51-50 win over the Brian Chase Academy Women. Avis McIntosh scored a match-high 24 points for Police spearheading the attack, while Corisa Blugh and Tenneka Hartley had 17 and 12 points respectively for Pacers. And Eastern Tigers put on their brave face and ran over Staff 93-72 in their first semi-final of the weekend. Crystal Kirton scored a strong-armed match-high 47 points and Crystal Gorin put in 42 points as the duo tortured Staff from points on the court. Staff’s main scorers were Jervelle King with a team high 18, Annette Rolston who scored 16 and Sherine James who ended the match on 15. Eastern Tigers advanced to Sunday’s semi-final with the Unit Trust Maloney Pacers women but were unable to field a team on the day after their great show on Saturday gifting Pacers a spot in the final due to forfeiture.

The Unit Trust Maloney Pacers First Division team swept their Big four series after a 66-48 Game One match with a 56-46 win over the Brian Chase Academy on Sunday. Derek Boxhill had 17, a match-high and Junior Harper had 11 points for the champs. The Academy’s First Division boys were outclassed as the efforts of Roland Sylvester and Andre Calliste, who had 14 and 12 points respectively, were not enough to buy them any time. They lost Game two of the three-match series and Pacers rallied home. The win cemented Pacers into the position of First Division kings as they took all three titles available to them — the League, Knock-Out and Big Four, mirroring their exploits of the 2003 campaign. Chaguanas Hackers beat Sangre Grande All Stars in the third place play-off of the First Division’s Big Four to remain just above cellar position. The Women’s Division Knock-Out Final is carded today while the Second Division Big Four will begin tomorrow at the Maloney Indoor Sport Arena, Maloney.
