Two shatterings from weed whacker

THE EDITOR: The writer of the article “Shattered windscreen from a weed whacker” (Newsday August 31, 2004) said he wanted to hear from anyone who lost a windscreen to weed whacking. Well, I have - on two occasions. The loss of the windscreens, which I had to pay to replace, was not as traumatic as the actual “accident.” The force with which the object hit was real nerve shattering and, had I not been an experienced driver, could have caused further accident.

On the first occasion I lost a windscreen and on the second the front passenger window. Thankfully, I was the driver on both occasions for had it been my husband, who never uses air-conditioning; the object would certainly have caused severe bodily damage to my daughter who was in the front passenger seat.

I have noticed that some users have two persons holding a barricade in front of the weed whacker so as to prevent the object from its potential destruction. However this measure is not adopted by all as it seems that they are oblivious of the danger of this lethal weapon. These persons or their employers must be held responsible for the damage they cause. Hopefully something will be put in place before serious injury to person.
