South cop survives attempt on life

A POLICEMAN, who was among several vacationing officers recalled for duty by Commissioner of Police Trevor Paul two weeks ago, escaped an attempt on his life when his car was forced off the road Tuesday night. Detective Cpl Edward Livia, attached to the San Fernando CID, suffered serious injuries to his face during the incident and reportedly underwent restorative surgery on one of his badly damaged eyes. The surgery was carried out yesterday at San Fernando General Hospital (SFGH). The incident occurred around 7.20 pm on Independence Day as Cpl Livia was driving his car along Union Hall, Cross Crossing.

He reported that as he was approaching the traffic lights at the intersection, two vehicles sped up and, cornered him and drove their cars onto his vehicle, forcing it off the road. The other cars then sped off. A report was made to police and a team of officers carried out an extensive search for the drivers. Up to late yesterday, however, no arrests had been made. A senior policeman, speaking on the basis of anonymity, told Newsday Cpl Livia was “an exemplary officer.” The senior policeman said he hoped Livia would not suffer permanent damage to his eye and also wished him a speedy recovery. Cpl Livia’s colleagues at San Fernando CID are continuing investigations.
