WIPA $100,000 for Grenada, Jamaica
WEST INDIES cricketers through the West Indies Players Association (WIPA) announced yesterday they are donating $100,000 to hurricane stricken Grenada and Jamaica. This announcement was made at a news conference at WIPA headquarters, Abercromby Street, yesterday. WIPA president Dinanath Ramnarine said: “The West Indies cricketers have pooled together a total of TT$100,000 to be sent to Grenada and Jamaica to help in relief efforts. “The West Indies cricketers as you would have noticed all wore black arm bands as a sign of solidarity. “They are all really worried about the situation in the Caribbean after Hurricane Ivan passed through last week.” West Indies skipper Brian Lara, before the Bangladesh game, expressed the hope of his team doing well in the current International Cricket Council (ICC) Trophy series, to lift the gloom that surrounds the Caribbean at present.
He said: “The players and WIPA remain committed to the region and its citizens and we hope that what ever we give can make a difference.” WIPA’s partner First Citizens Bank Limited matched the association by also giving $100,000 to the relief effort. FCB chief executive officer Garth Chatoor said, “the bank has decided to join with WIPA in this effort because it was a very commendable deed being done by the players. “We at FCB are happy to announce that we are also donating $100,000 to the relief effort and later on we intend to give more as we get a proper assessment of the damage in both Islands.” WIPA is also calling on all citizens to help in the effort to restore a decent state of living in both countries by making deposits in account number for 1396030.
