Army conquer Soul City in Super Cup n-ball
DEFENCE FORCE conquered Soul City 42-40 in a thrilling Group One match on Saturday, as the chase for the $10,000 winner’s prize in the inaugural NASAMA Enterprises-organised Net-ball Super Cup Champion-ships opened at the Jean Pierre Complex, Mucurapo. Following a colourful march past of the 10 invited teams, the Army-Coast Guard team found a determined Soul City in the second game of a double-feature. At the end of the first period, Soul City led Defence Force 9-8, but the Port-of-Spain Netball League runners-up tightened up in defence to outscore their rivals 13-9 to take command 21-18 at the half-time stage.
But Soul City were not going away without a struggle and they kept in a challenging position behind the accurate shooting of Cadman Worrell who finished with 20 goals from 24 attempts, as the third-quarter ended with Defence Force Still leading 33-28. A fierce struggle ensued in the final period, but Defence Force held off a determined Soul City late rally, despite being outscored 12-9 for the end result. Trinidad and Tobago goal-shoot Dianna Pierre scored 12 of 29 attempts and Stephen Lewis got 30 of 43 for Defence Force, while Ashley “Dr Dunk” Bynoe had 18 goals from 22 attempts and Patricia Goring two of six for Soul City.
Earlier, Mucurapo Ex-Pupils whipped C&B United (Canaan/Bon Accord) 43-35 in Group Two. National under-21 star Afeisha Noel scored 30 of 43 attempts and Simone Morgan 15 of 25 for Ex-Pupils, while for the Tobago contingent, Cliff Nicholson got 25 goals from 34 attempts, Leesel Thomas eight from 17 and Wendy Wallace two of four. Ex-Pupils led comfortably 15-4 at the end of the first stage, but C&B made a bold second quarter charge to hold their opponents 9-8 although still trailing 24-12 at the interval. The Tobagonians did even better at the end of the three-quarter period, outscoring Ex-Pupils 14-9, with the scoreline reading 33-26, but the winners blunted the C&B United ambitions with a fourth-quarter rally of their own holding them to nine goals while scoring 12 for the final score. Action continued at the same venue yesterday.
