Cox wins 5k in record time

CURTIS COX,  a filing clerk with Colfire In-surance Limited, yesterday convincingly won the Venture Credit Union  5k Road Race in a record time of 14 minutes 33 seconds. Over 500 athletes took the field in the event which was held to commemorate the 42nd anniversary of Indepen-dence of Trinidad and Tobago celebrated on August 31. Tobago-born Curtis, who now resides in Curepe, said he was pleased with his  performance. “Moreso, as I have broken the previous best time for the event  which stood at 14 minutes 41  seconds.”

For his victory, Cox received a cheque for $700 from Charles Percy, the president of the Couva based credit union. In scond place was Richard Jones (14:48), who got $400, and Errol “Baldhead” Williams was third in 15:10. He collected $300. Fourth was Brian Maynard (15:23) who was presented with a cheque for $200, while in fifth place was Sandino Nero (15:38), who collected $150. In the Female Category, the winner was Pilar Mc Shine of Success/Laventille Compo-site School. The Port-of-Spain school also made a clean sweep of the next three top positions —Samantha Shurla,  Shermain La Salda and Kema Mc Shine in second, third and fourth respectively. Tonya Nero of Athletic Central came in fifth. They received prize money equivalent to the first five male runners.
