TT, look out for Grenadian killers
LAW ENFORCEMENT authorities in Trinidad and Tobago have been put on alert for criminal fugitives who may be attempting to flee hurricane-devastated Grenada and seek refuge either in TT or elsewhere in the Caribbean. At the TT Defence Force section of the Special Services Unit base in Grand Anse, posters of nine hardened criminals who are still on the run, are on display. These persons are wanted on a variety of criminal offences including murder and rape, and at least one is considered mentally unstable. TT soldiers have been involved in operations to recapture inmates from the Richmond Hill Prison in Grenada, which was damaged by Hurricane Ivan two weeks ago. To date, most of the prison’s 400 inmates have been recaptured.
Forty of Richmond Hill’s most hardened criminals, including former Grenadian Deputy PM Bernard Coard and former army commander, General Hudson Austin, have been transferred to St Lucia until the Grenada prison is repaired. Both men were ringleaders in the October 1983 uprising which killed then Grenada PM Maurice Bishop and several of his ministers. Lt Dexter Metivier of the TTDF said Coard, Austin and other persons involved in the 1983 uprising were the most well-behaved of Richmond Hill’s inmates. He said many of these persons have used their time in jail to obtain university degrees and operations were ongoing to recapture those fugitives still on the run. At left are photos of nine Grenadian fugitives who are still on the run and local authorities have been put on alert in case they attempt to flee to this country.
