Glen sends MetroStars into playoffs

NEW YORK: Three footballers with Caribbean roots helped their teams to victory in the United States Major League Soccer on Saturday. Second-half substitute Cornell Glen of Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaican defender Craig Ziadie were instrumental in the MetroStars becoming the second team in the Eastern Conference to qualify for the playoff when they defeated Dallas Burn 2-0. Jamaica Reggae Boyz midfielder Andy Williams, as usual, pulled the strings in the midfield for Chicago Fire and had a hand in their second goal that helped them claim a 2-0 victory over the New England Revolution and gain a little breathing space in their battle for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

In Dallas, John Wolyniec notched the opening goal for the MetroStars on an assist from Ziadie, but Glen, unassisted, added a late insurance goal in stoppage time. In Chicago, newly acquired Andy Herron scored both goals for Fire, who opened the scoring in the seventh minute when the forward was serviced by a pass from Chris Armas and re-directed the ball into an open goal. Revolution came close twice in the second half, but the Fire added an important goal about 15 minute from time. Herron deftly redirected a cross from Armas, who had been set free down the right flank by Williams. (CMC)
