John misses penalty, Coventry beaten

LONDON: Ipswich Town moved into second place in the English Second Division yesterday after a last-gasp 2-1 victory at Coventry City. An own goal by Coventry’s Matthew Mills three minutes from time gifted Ipswich the win that takes them level on 24 points with leaders Wigan Athletic who beat Rotherham United 2-0 on Saturday.

Teenager Dean Bowditch crept in at the far post to put Ipswich ahead after 70 minutes but Patrick Suffo equalised for Coventry seven minutes later. Trinidad and Tobago’s striker Stern John had a first-half penalty saved by Ipswich goalkeeper Lewis Price after Tim Sherwood was brought down in the box by Drissa Diallo. Reading, who drew 0-0 with Burnley on Saturday, are third with 23 points with in-form Queen’s Park Rangers fourth, also on 23 after their victory at Stoke City.
