Knock-Out Promotions to lift ‘pro’ boxing
The Knock-Out Promotions conglomerate is here to take professional boxing in Trinidad and Tobago to a higher level. Beginning with a six-bout card on October 29 at the Woodbrook Youth Facility, knock-Out Promotions will feature the talents of Jimmy “Farmer” Joseph, Kerston Manswell, Kirt Sinnette and a strong supporting cast. Working in tandem with Surefire Promotions, Knock-Out is staffed by Winston Yearwood, Physical Trainer at Tigers Boxing Gym and Texas-based Roy Jones. Jones said he was responsible for the rise of the youngest World Boxing Association (WBA) title holder, 17-year-old welterweight champ Juan Diaz and promises to give local boxers some much needed international exposure. On what has been deemed the “Road to the Championship” Joseph is said to be fighting fit down to 235 lbs from 260 lbs for his eight-round heavyweight appointment. He faces Ronnie “Big Bear” Smith of Hawaii who tips the scales at a “super” 285 lbs, in the evening’s main event.
Smith arrives in Trinidad and Tobago on October 27 and will be accompanied by Jones and a team of managers and match makers from the United States of America in the hope,” of encouraging an early title shot for Joseph and to open up further opportunities for local boxers. Manswell, who weighed 235 lbs for his last bout and is used to enjoying top billing. But he will precede the main bout against John Morris (235 lbs) of Guyana in the first of two heavyweight fights on the night. Sinnette (2-0) will meet Aldwyn Straker for a well-matched middleweight (147 lbs) scrap. Like Sinnette and Manswell, Mikkel Agard, described by Yearwood as “a promising and exciting pugilist,” will also be keen on a third successive knock-out victory since stepping over to the professional side of the discipline. He is carded to take on Enos Malchan in a featherweight contest. The card begins at 8 pm and the supporting fights will also feature two amateur bouts. Tickets are $50 Ringside and $20 for General Admission. For further information please call Yearwood at Super Power Gym at 627-7274.
