St Augustine, Scarborough crowned new champs

ST AUGUSTINE and Scarborough are the new winners of the East and Tobago Zones respectively in the British Gas Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL), following 2-1 victories in yesterday’s round of matches. Playing at home against second-placed San Juan, the “Green Machine” St Augustine were rewarded with goals from national youth team pair Shastri Spencer (Under-17) and Shane Calderon (Under-20) while Michael Brown found the mark for San Juan.

Hillview remained in third position after a 6-1 drubbing of the “Diamond Cutters” Valencia at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Tunapuna. Stefan George and Keon Lyons netted two goals apiece for Hillview while Odinga Richards and Ricardo Alleyne added one apiece from the penalty spot. Joel Alexander pulled one back for the winless Valencia. Keno Kerr was the hero for Scarborough, as he struck twice to ensure victory for his team over Roxborough, a result which gave Scarborough an unassailable five-point lead over dethroned Zonal winners Signal Hill with only one round of matches remaining. In the first match of the doubleheader at Shaw Park, Bishop’s hammered Elizabeth’s 18-0.

The South Zonal crown will be decided tomorrow with 2002 and 2003 champs Naparima maintaining their slim one-point lead over Princes Town. Naps earned a 2-1 victory away to Pleasantville with Andrew Bailey and Kezi Lara on target, while Kurlon Garcia netted the lone item for the hosts. Goals in either half by Keon Neptune and Cillon Moore gave P/Town a 2-0 win against hosts Moruga while St Benedict’s sealed third spot after a 2-0 triumph over Vessigny at the Mahaica Oval — Matthew Bartholomew and Akil Belfon scoring for the La Romaine lads. In the other match in the zone, Fyzabad got the better of Mayaro 3-1 at home courtesy of a double from Anton Preddie (8th and 70th minutes) and a strike from Andre Quashie (89th) while national Under-17 forward Carlon Hughes (38th) got the consolation strike for Mayaro.
