Deafening silence on botched runway
THE EDITOR: Where are all of the voices against the airport contracts now? As a born and bred Trini and a frequent traveller, I for one can state that it feels good to have a world class airport like we have now, especially when one compares it to the other airports in the Caribbean or the cowshed that we previously had. I recall just a few years ago, there were several organisations that were quite vociferous in regards to the construction of the new airport. There were regular accusations of corruption and poor quality. I invite all to now go unto the site “Caribbean Airports” and you will note that our airport was one of the cheapest built for its size.
However, I have noticed that the same organisations who were so concerned about corruption and quality, have now gone silent with regard to the botched paving done on the runway, which has become a waste of over $30 million in taxpayers’ money, with nothing to show, except for a pocket of a contractor that has become heavy that is close to the government. Transparency International, the Engineering Society, JCC, and the Contractors Association, “where are you now?” The silence is deafening. Please do not show your colours so much, or you may be referred to as nothing more than hypocrites and political pawns of the present government.
