TT Police n-ballers bounce back
CASTRIES: Defending champions Police Stars, of Trinidad and Tobago, avenged their first night lost to Rangers of Barbados, with a comfortable 65-38 win over St Lucia’s Avengers on the second night of the Helen of the West netball festival at the Vigie Multi-Purpose Sports Complex. Police stayed ahead the entire match, leading 16-10, 39-16, 49-29 in the first three quarters. Goal shoot Beverley Hernandez shot 28 from 35 attempts and goal attack Donna Charles was consistent with 37 goals from 43 attempts. For the local team Avengers, scorers were goal shoot Indira Laurencin with 29 successful attempts from 31 tries and goal attack Merlessa Alfred, nine from 21.
St Lucia’s Elite Strikers won their second straight match, but not without a battle against Defence Force of Trinidad and Tobago 39-38. Defence Force led at the first break 10-9 and trailed the next two 17-19 and 27-29. Deidra Mathurin did the bulk of the shooting for Elite Stars with 33 goals from 41 attempts and Glata Gabriel scored six from ten attempts. Goal shoot Diana Pierre shot 22 of 32 attempts for the Defence Force, while Anastacia Wilson contributed nine from 14, and Lystra Zamore seven from 11. There were victories for two other local teams Sunday night, Orion and Soufriere. Orion beat Trac of St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) in an exciting encounter 38-35, and community-based Soufriere team erased a huge first quarter deficit 4-13, to defeat Turnford of England 30-28.
