Woman charged for abandoning child
A 26-year-old Chaguanas woman was arrested late yesterday afternoon and charged with abandoning her newborn baby girl. The woman was arrested after investigations by officers of the Chaguanas CID under Cpl Terrence Williams and WPC Jacqueline Gustav. At around 4 pm, officers went to Endeavour Road Chaguanas, where they arrested the 26-year-old woman and took her to the Chaguanas Police Station.
The arrest came almost one week after a newborn baby girl was found under a galvanise sheet in Endeavour. The child, who is in good health at the Paediatric Unit of the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, was covered with ants when she was found. The child’s mother told police yesterday that she became pregnant for a close relative, hence the reason she abandoned the baby. She will appear before a Chaguanas magistrate today.
