Arrive Alive wants walkover at Beetham

This follows the death on Saturday of 54-yearold Pedro Frank who was struck by a car while attempting to cross the highway near the Beetham Landfill .

Inglefield suggested that whatever the reason for the Government not yet constructing a walkover near Beetham Gardens, the right thing should always be done .

“Perhaps the cost associated with walkovers and the fact that some pedestrians refuse to utilise this safer means of crossing highways which is preventing the construction of such a facility,” Inglefield said .

“You will have to discuss this with the Director of Highways and his engineers. Our leaders, through the media, have often discussed the relocation of the dump and perhaps this is another reason why there is no decision with regards to a walkover. Too many pedestrians continue to die on our nation’s roads due to the fact that drivers forget that pedestrians also have a right as a road user.” Inglefield is suggesting that concrete fences be erected to “divide established residential neighbourhoods like Beetham Gardens from the traffic, particularly traffic travelling at over 50 kph .

“Neighbourhood meetings need to take place prior to construction to educate and provide actual data and to obtain buy in from the neighbourhood.” Inglefield also reiterated her organisation’s call for an IRAPP (International Road Assessment Programme) audit to determine the best solution for roads like the “particular stretch of highway” at the Beetham. She also urged drivers to drive as if a pedestrian could be crossing at any time and residents in the area to walk the long distance to the traffic lights in Sea Lots to safeguard their lives .
