DORM ROOM Design
First of all because space is limited you need to reclaim floor space because every bit of space counts. The space under the bed is like gold. If the bed in you room is a standard single bed then the bed is taking up valuable floor space. Ask whether the bed is capable of being lofted. If so, then reclaim the space and use it for storage, studying or relaxing. If the lofting option is not available then buy some bed risers that will lift the bed a few precious inches that will allow additional storage. Use your suitcase as storage and then store that under the bed. There are also storage containers designed for under the bed.
Next, think about using furniture that can do double duty. Every piece of furniture has to have another function. This is one sure way of getting all you need to fit in the small space. For example an ottoman can be a seat, a storage unit and a table. Likewise the dresser can double as a vanity. If your space is big enough for a sofa or armchair these can become an extra bed when needed.
Use the space above the microwave or refrigerator as storage for dishes etc. Use the dorm room door to hang shoes, snacks or clothes. Then there is the over-bed shelf, which has either one or two shelves for storing lots of items. Of course you need to create a charging station to keep all your chargers in one place.
If you are sharing a room and need to have a bit of personal space you can hang a curtain around the bed or use a unit with open shelving if space dictates as a divider.
Now that the function of the room is taken care of, it is time to add some personality. Add a focal point with oversized art, a tapestry or something unusual to give your space the wow factor.
It is best to keep the basic colour of your stuff neutral and add colour, pattern and texture with a rug, artwork, decals, removable wallpaper, scarves, comforter covers and the like. That way when you are on a budget and you get bored of the look you can easily change any of the elements. A very inexpensive way to create art and add colour to your room is with washi tape.
Create an oasis on your bed. Get comfortable inexpensive (sale) bedding in solid colours. They will last a long time and be flexible to coordinate with the colour scheme of your roommate if you have one. Use bed skirts because they can hide a lot of sins. There is also the bed skirt organiser and the bed caddy, these are great ways to store lots of stuff. 17
