Roopnarine ousted, TT return home with 3 CRTTF medals

Having progressed after topping Group Five in the earlier rounds, Roopnarine advanced to the ‘quarters’ by getting past Guyanese Nigel Bryan 3-1 (14-21, 10-12, 11- 8, 11-3) on Thursday night.

However, his winning momentum would be put to rest in the quarter-final round as home-boy Santos emerged a 4-0 (5-11, 8-11, 7-11, 5-11) victor.

In his group matches earlier this week, the local University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT ) representative advanced ahead of the pack by defeating Curacao’s Devon Meilink 11-8, 11-6, 11-6; Bajan Marcus Smith 11-5, 11-7, 11-8 and Dominican Republic’s Mariano Lockward 11-9, 4-11, 9-11, 11-8, 11-7.

Roopnarine was TT ’s final contestant at this year’s edition having bagged three medals prior. Veteran player, David Mahabir captured silver in the Maters 50 & Over after losing out 2-3 (12- 10, 12-10, 7-11, 9-11, 8-11) to Leisester Florimon (Dominican Republic) in the title match. And in the Team Events, both the men and women’s teams gained bronze medals.

In the men’s third place playoff, TT got wins from Mahabir, Yuvraaj Dookram and Roopnarine to blank Guyana 3-0.

And in the women’s equivalent, national trio Aleena Edwards, Linda Partap-Boodhan and Brittnay Joseph won a second-straight team bronze after beating Barbados 3-0 in their final round-robin clash of the four-team series.
