Man in wheelchair surrenders to police

The man, who is unable to walk after undergoing a recent operation, was wheeled into the police station in the presence of his attorney, Shiva Boodoo.

In an exercise spearheaded by Snr Supt Inraj Balram and including Insp Brian Ramphal and Sgt Terrence Victor, officers of the South Western Division executed a warrant on premises located near Lodge Road, Southern Main Road, Claxton Bay.

A total of nine firearms were seized — two shotguns, five AK 47s, one rifle and one .9mm pistol. Police also recovered 18 magazines, one scope and in excess of 1000 rounds of assorted ammunition.

Speaking to Newsday yesterday, Boodoo said his client was not at the house at the time of the raid and was, instead, receiving medical attention at a private institution.

Boodoo said his client decided to surrender after he was told that a manhunt had been launched for him.

“He had a double bypass surgery in 2005. He is also a diabetic and must take his insulin every morning and evening,” Boodoo explained.

He said his client’s left toe was amputated three years ago and, in May, three more toes had to be amputated on his left foot. “He has since been ordered by a doctor to stay off his feet. My client cannot run,” he said.
