Doldron says he’ll be back

Ken Doldron, president of the Trinidad and Tobago’s National Amateur Athletic Association, is confident that his achievements will assure him re-election. Doldron is looking to secure his second term in office, when he faces off with Carl Alfonso on November 20. The incumbent believes that the achievements his team were able to accomplish in the three years at the helm will stand them in good stead come next Saturday. “What we did in the last three years, we identified some areas where we wanted to achieve,” he said.  “We want to make sure that athletes were not called upon to pay when they were selected to represent their country. “We promised that we would have a big company outfitting our athletes for the next three or four years, and from that we have a five-year contract with Adidas and, finally, we have established a home for track and field.”

Despite these achievements, Doldron acknowledged there was still work to be done with the establishment of a major national coaching programme and the development of the club system. “The achievements came at the cost of being more involved in the development of our clubs and a major national coaching programme,” he said. Doldron has identified these areas that will receive plenty of attention if he is returned to office. “I think that the focus will be creating a national programme leading up to Beijing 2008 and the development of the smaller clubs into a proper structure, so that the administration of the clubs will be in keeping with the national concept,” he said.
