Security guards in court for firearm offences

Shaun Meetoo, 36, and his employee, Davy Mohammed, 45, both of Claxton Bay, were taken before Magistrate Nanette Forde- John in the San Fernando First Magistrate’s Court to answer to the charges laid against them.

The cases were heard separately.

In the first case, Forde-John read the charge to Meetoo which alleged that on September 23, he transferred a shotgun and four 12-gauge cartridges to Mohammed knowing that he (Mohammed) did not posses a licence for a firearm or ammunition. The charge was laid indictably by Cpl Shaun Mohammed of the San Fernando CID and Meetoo was not called upon to enter a plea.

It is alleged that the transactions were made at Claxton Bay.

Attorney Subhas Panday, who represented Meetoo, said his client is a manager at a security firm. Panday said Meetoo is also the father of 12-year-old twin girls and that he has no previous convictions known against him.

He was granted bail in the sum of $75,000 to be approved by a Clerk of the Peace or a $20,000 cash alternative.

Minutes later, Mohammed appeared and the charge was read to him that on September 21, he had in his possession a shotgun and and four 12-gauge cartridges, him not being the holder of licences for the items.

Attorney Netram Kowlessar, who represented Mohammed, said that that his client has worked at another security company for 12 years and had a Firearms Users Employee Certificate (FUEC).

He said when his client started working at the present security firm he applied for a new FUEC which he assumed was granted.

He said Mohammed was a precepted sergeant. Forde-John granted Mohammed bail in the sum of $75,000 to be approved by a Clerk of the Peace or $15,000 cash alternative.

The matters were adjourned to October 24.
