CIBC, Roy Cape in prostate cancer walk

He is calling for men to take care of themselves and be screened.

Prostate cancer is the leading cause of cancer mortality among men in TT.

Noting that TT has one of the highest death rates from prostate cancer, Cape said, “This is tragic and so avoidable, if only we had more awareness and better education about screening. I think too many people are not aware of what a huge risk prostate cancer is in our society, and how much of a threat it is to our male population.” Diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2014, Cape said he was “very blessed to be here today. My purpose is to do all that I can to prevent others from suffering.” Too many lives in TT, he said, “have been affected by prostate cancer, and people must know there is no shame in getting screened — only power.

You owe it to yourself and your loved ones to take care of your health and ensure you are around to achieve your best potential in this life.” CIBC local operation Managing Director Anthony Seeraj said CIBC was honoured to have Cape allied with the bank to help improve lives.

Urging everyone to come out on Sunday to support the cause, he expressed the hope that the walk would create a surge of awareness for prostate cancer preventative measures.

“At CIBC FirstCaribbean,” he said, “our mission is to be ‘first for communities’, and the walk was one of the main channels for advancing health and wellness within society.” Walk For the Cure, according to the CIBC FirstCaribbean, is one of the region’s largest cancer fund-raisers, drawing thousands of participants across the 16 CIBC branch territories together.

Over the past four years, the bank said, it raised over US$1 million from the event, primarily supported by corporate donors and diverse fund-raising activities and events hosted by staff members.

The funds are donated to organisations dedicated to the care of cancer patients.

This year, CIBC in TT aligned itself with Vitas House Hospice TT to stage the walk. “Vitas House will channel the support from CIBC to the Prostate Clinic at the TT Cancer Society, underwriting all costs for patients’ tests during the relative period,” CIBC said.
