56 immigrants held in police exercise
Illegal immigrants were arrested at various parts of the Northern Division and taken to the Aripo Detention Centre where they were interviewed for most of yesterday by officers of the Immigration Department.
Officers report that the detention of the illegal immigrants is the largest in recent years. They added that the country has hundreds of illegal immigrants who are working in restaurants, groceries and as security guards. Also in the exercise, officers arrested a 30-year-old man who went to use the ATM at the Arima branch of RBC Bank.
According to reports at 9 pm on Friday the man, allegedly armed with a glock pistol and several rounds of ammunition, was walking to the ATM when he was arrested by officers. He was searched and the weapon and ammunition allegedly found.
Officers also issued 150 tickets and five persons were held for driving under the influence.
