Shiva Boys on brink of SSFL title

Shiva Boys eased past St Mary’s 3-0 at Irwin Park in Siparia to register their 10th win of the season and, more importantly, maintain their five-point lead over two-time defending champions Naparima and Presentation San Fernando (who were on a bye yesterday).

Junior Assoon scored a pair for Shiva Boys, in the 43rd and 77th minutes, while Tyrell Baptiste found the back of the net in the 75th.

Naparima kept their fading hopes alive with a hard-fought 1-0 win over the struggling QRC at Lewis Street, San Fernando. Jeremiah Kesar scored in second half stoppage time to secure full points for the hosts.

Shiva Boys need only a win from their last two games - away fixtures against Pleasantville on Saturday and Fatima next Wednesday, to secure their first major title in SSFL history.

In the biggest upset of the day, cellar-placed St Benedict’s registered their first win of the season, a 1-0 result away to St Anthony’s at Westmoorings. Detori Boucher was the marksman for St Benedict’s in the 78th.

With the bottom three teams to be relegated to the Zonal Championship Divisions, Pleasantville and Fatima did themselves no favours as they both remained in the lower bracket.

Pleasantville fell to a 1-0 loss away to Trinity College at Moka, while Fatima were beaten 2-0 away to Signal Hill.

In other matches yesterday, St Augustine trounced East Mucurapo 4-0 at St Augustine while Fyzabad defeated San Juan North 3-2 at Fyzabad.
