Wildey capture Tobago Masters crown
The 2016 Barbados champions were led by captain Gregory Goodridge who scored both goals for the winners.
Wildey became the first foreign team in the six-year history of the tournament to take the overall title. Goodridge inspired with team leading the attack and showed great skill in front.
The former Barbados captain was the standout on the final day of the three-day contest reproducing some of the form that led to him earning professional contracts with Queen’s Park Rangers and Bristol City in the English Premier League.
Phillip Jordan was outstanding in goal - the 58-year-old pulled off several acrobatic saves to help his side to victory.
The champions were rewarded with a cheque of US$2,000 presented by THA Secretary of Education, Youth Affairs and Sport Huey Cadette.
Goodridge was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) and collected US$150 for his effort from TT ’s Paralympic Games gold medallist and record holder Akeem Stewart.
Juventus were going for a third title to add to victories in 2012 and 2013. With tournament’s MVP Kendall Velox and Roger Callendar in the line up the runners-up were confident of a hattrick.
However, Callendar suffered a shoulder injury and was substituted in the final, while Juventus went home with US$1,000.
Toyota claimed third spot with a hard fought 4-3 penalty shootout win over two-time reigning champions Defence Force.
Sixteen teams from five countries (six from Tobago, five fromTrinidad, three from Barbados, one from Grenada, one from Guyana) participated in this year’s tournament.
Teams played for just over US$3,500 in prizes provided by major sponsors the Division of Education, Youth Affairs and Sport and the Division of Tourism and Transportation.
