Doldron beats ‘Brig’ in elections
KEN DOLDRON will remain as president of the National Amateur Athletic Association (NAAA) for another three years. The retired Sergeant Major turned back the challenge of retired Brigadier Carl Alfonso 52-31 during a lengthy election process at the Audio Visual Room, Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo yesterday. In fact, Doldron’s team demolished their opponents, entitled the “Ambassadors” by a landslide victory, as they claimed all 15 executive positions. While he expressed his gratitude to Alfonso for a well-fought battle, Doldron told the gathering, “all the people who have supported me, all the people here, the work of the association will now start.” George Commissiong retained his spot as first vice-president, whipping Ashwin Creed 52-27; Dr Ian Hypolite defeated Jimkins Clarke for the post of second vice-president 52-29; Ephraim Serrette captured the vacant position of third vice-president, as he edged Nadine Hamid 43-34 while Durly Lucas got 42 votes, ahead of James Dedier (26) and Albert King (10), for the fourth vice-president post, a spot which was formerly held by Hypolite.
Peter Samuel will conduct the affairs of the Public Relations Officer, a post vacated by Hamid, after he whipped Bason Smith 47-29 while Carlene Haynes will continue her work as treasurer, following a 54-25 triumph over Ian Carter. With Samuel elevated to the PRO position, 1976 Olympic 100-metre champ Hasely Crawford and Gunness Persad were retained as trustees, and will be joined by Paul Voisin. And the committee members will comprise of Lucretia Warner-Burns, Rawle Francis, Trevor James and two new additions Kenny Bermudez and Gerald Franklyn. Alfonso was gracious in defeat yesterday evening. “I suppose I should feel disappointed because I lost but I want to congratulate Doldron,” Alfonso noted. “I think he did a wonderful job and, in fact, wiped our slate clean. It was a nice experience and I’ll be back next three years.”
