Cop in elite unit probed
A police officer attached to one of this country’s elite units, is now being investigated for allegedly collecting huge sums of money to ensure that a high profile case now before a magistrate goes a certain way. Sources revealed the investigation was first carried out by ACP Crime, James Philbert, who is now on five months leave. However, concerns were expressed yesterday about the status of the investigation due to the absence of Philbert. Senior officers told Newsday the officer under question has been given additional duties by senior officers and they fear the probe may have been swept under the carpet. One officer said a special unit comprising former police officers and security officers should be set up to investigate police officers suspected of illegal acts. They said the service was now riddled with several probes, which are being covered up.
