We can do more to help those with disabilities

It aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilise support for the dignity, rights and well being of people with disabilities.

It seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of people with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.

The theme for 2016 is “Achieving 17 goals for the future we want”.

One of the goals is to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

Another is to promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all.

Some main facts about people with disabilities: * One million people on this planet have some form of disability, ten percent of whom are children.

* Eighty percent of people with disabilities live in the developing world.

* People with disabilities are all too often left outside the workplace.

* Children with disabilities are four times more likely to be the victims of violence than other children. Bullying is rampant.

* People with disabilities are among the world’s poorest people.

* Fifty percent of the people with disabilities do not have access to healthcare and their right to live is not assured.

More definitive action is vital in TT .

People with disabilities can lead full lives in the community.

Let no one be left behind.
