Decrease in TT annual HIV infections

Bailey-Sobers, speaking at the Ministry’s World Aids Day event held on the Brian Lara Promenade, in Port-of- Spain, said the Ministry continues to do what it can to sensitise the population and reduce the yearly rate of HIV infections.

“As at the end of September 2015, there were 17 million people living with HIV,” Bailey-Sobers said. “However, right now in Trinidad and Tobago, we have 11,000 people living with the disease. However, we’ve made significant progress as a country. In 2012, December, we had 22,085 persons diagnosed with HIV. So we are progressing.

We continue to ensure that people have access to HIV anti- retroviral drugs, and we on our side continue to make sure that people understand the disease, they’re educated about it and they know how to protect themselves.” Bailey-Sobers also pointed out that Trinidad and Tobago is second in the rate of HIV infections to Sub-Saharan Africa.”
