Prison conditions case set for next year
The constitutional motion brought by prisoner Ronald Harewood against deplorable prison conditions at the Remand Yard, Port-of- Spain, came up yesterday before Justice Mira Dean-Armorer. Armorer directed the State to file its affidavits in response to Harewood’s allegations by January 31, 2005, and if necessary, for Harewood to respond. The matter was adjourned to February 21, 2005. Appearing for Harewood are Fyard Hosein, Darrel Allahar, Rishi Dass and Ravi Heffes-Doon, while Avory Sinanan SC is appearing for the State. Harewood is claiming that because of the filthy prison conditions, his detention was illegal, ultra vires and unconstitutional.
