Taxi driver abducted, robbed and beaten
A Carapo man was abducted from his home, beaten and robbed on Wednesday night. He was freed around 1 am yesterday at David Toby Road, Cunupia. Reports revealed that taxi driver Jebrel Ali, 30, was at his home with his wife Hemrajie Kanhai and one-year-old son around 10 pm, when two men claiming to be police officers stormed into the house. They grabbed Ali and bundled him into a waiting car.
One of the men fired a shot in the air as they fled the scene. Ali told police officers that he was beaten repeatedly and suffered deep cuts about the body. He was robbed of $700, stripped down to his underwear and allowed to go free in bushes at David Toby Road. Ali said that he alerted a resident of the area who took him to the Cunupia Police Station. He was treated by a doctor and allowed to go home. His relieved wife Hemrajie said she was happy to have her husband back home. She told Newsday that her husband is not a rich man and he was unfairly targetted by the bandits. Officers of the Anti-Kidnapping Squad are investigating.
