HCU CASE POSTPONED
President of the Hindu Credit Union, Harry Harnarine, and three of the organisation’s security officers appeared in an Arima court yesterday on a charge of allegedly taking part in an illegal march held in the Piarco area. The march took place on July 11. Standing before Magistrate Deborah Quintine in the Arima First Court were Harnarine and his co-accused, Ronald Malchan, Elvis Sookoo and Norbert Ramdeen. When the matter was called yesterday, Harnarine, who spoke on behalf of each of the accused, told the Magistrate that attorneys Prakash Ramadhar and Larry Lalla, who represented each of the men, were unable to come to court.
Harnarine also told the magistrate that his attorney told him someone would be sent to act on his behalf. However, by the time the matter was called, the representative was a no-show. Harnarine is charged with leading an illegal march without authority and resisting arrest while the three guards are charged with resisting arrest and obstructing police officers in the course of duty. The matter was adjourned to April 7, 2005.
