Fisherman drowns off East Coast

A 39-year-old fisherman drowned on Friday night after his pirogue overturned while fishing out on the high seas. According to police sources, Joseph Samaroo of Edward Trace, Mayaro, along with three others went out to sea to fish, about five miles from the east coast of Trinidad, in the vicinity of Ortoire Village, Mayaro, when their vessel overturned due to the rough waters and high swells.

The other three were however fortunate to swim ashore to safety, but Samaroo reportedly got into difficulties and drowned. His body was recovered by members of the Coast Guard around 10.30 am yesterday. District Medical Officer (DMO) Dr Rampaul visited the scene and ordered the body’s removal to the Port-of-Spain mortuary to await a post mortem on Monday.
