DJs, there are noise pollution laws

THE EDITOR: It appears that many of our radio announcers are blissfully unaware of noise pollution laws. Indeed, as if we did not have enough problems getting neighbours to respect our right to quiet enjoyment of our homes, we now have disc jockeys urging faithful listeners to “put those speakers in the porch and pump up the volume.” One particular female announcer on 103 FM (a Saturday night programme) is especially ridiculous, encouraging people to “pong that music” and “bigging up” residents in various parts of Trinidad who are disturbing their neighbours.

I do not know if the quality of music is so poor that it needs to be turned up to top volume, or if most Trinis are deaf, or if common decency and consideration simply do not constitute part of these people’s upbringing. Really, many of these goodly djs are already irritating enough, what with their offshore accents and inability to turn a phrase. One would hope and pray that they do not call attention to themselves by promoting flagrant violation of our noise laws. My last message is for all djs to whom the above epistle applies, in the language that you may understand: Please, pretty please, get a clue.
