NAR passes sentence on Cecil Caruth today

The axe could descend today on NAR Tobago political leader Cecil Caruth. Party chairman Christo Gift told Newsday that the NAR Tobago’s executive met at its Scarborough office late Monday evening to discuss several issues, including Caruth’s recent decision to contest the January 17 Tobago House of Assembly (THA) elections on the DAC’s platform. While declining to say what decision the executive had taken regarding Caruth’s future as leader, Gift said members emerged from Monday’s meeting in agreement that they could not agree with the position taken by Caruth, and Caruth has isolated himself by taking the position that he has. He added that all shall be revealed at a news conference scheduled for the NAR’s Scarborough office around 11 am today.

Gift reiterated that the executive could not justify abandoning the party’s name and banner in any proposed alliance with the DAC. The NAR Tobago chairman said the party has not ruled out the possibility of an election accommodation with the DAC, but the chances of this happening have dimmed considerably in light of Caruth’s actions. Gift added that the NAR will also update the population about its plans for the elections at today’s news conference.
