Suspect found hanging in police station

Troy Ward of Barataria, who was recently released from prison after serving six years, was detained shortly after Rasheed Khan was killed. Ward was taken to the Tunapuna Police Station where he was given a white jumpsuit to wear by officers of the Homicide Investigations Bureau. Ward was interviewed about the shooting and was told that Khan had succumbed to the gunshot injuries.

Ward later confided to other prisoners inside the police station that he had no intention of returning to jail. It is believed that he took off the jumpsuit, tied one end to the bars of the cell and the other around his neck and committed suicide.

The body was discovered by a police officer while he was making a routine check of the prison cells.

Ward’s body was removed to the Forensic Science Centre in St James where an autopsy is expected to be done. Investigations are continuing.
