New Tobago ferry set for first trip

The new inter-island ferry, the MV Sonia, will set sail for the first time from Trinidad to Tobago  on Wednesday at 9 am. Speaking during a tour of the ship at the Cruiseship Complex yesterday, ship Captain Nick Inglis expressed full confidence that Sonia will safely transport the 800 persons, 325 vehicles and 59 crew members expected to travel from Port-of-Spain to Scarborough. “I guarantee a reliable service from Lady Sonia,” said Captain Inglis. “She is a brand new boat so only smooth sailing is expected from her.” He said Sonia was registered on October 24 this year after passing all relevant safety requirements.

It consists of four standard life boats, each of which can hold differing amounts. The Sonia can carry up to 9,925 tonnes and is 177 metres long and 20 metres wide. Captain Inglis noted that although the maximum transportation capacity of the MF Panorama is 800 persons, Sonia can carry up to 1,000 persons as there are more cabins and seats available. He also pointed out that although she is more luxurious than the MF Panorama, the fare to travel on the ferry  remains the same — $25 for a one way ticket and $50 for a return ticket. Cabin tickets also go at the same price — $160 for one-way and $320 for return.
