Musicians celebrate Voisin
The jam was going very well with people enjoying the music and interacting after hearing songs like Feel so Good and Old Lady Walk A Mile and a Half.
But everything changed around 10.55pm when Leston Paul took stage, joining the group which was playing Girl From Ipanema, and took the music to a different level. A loud roar of approval greeted their finale.
The master keyboardist then struck up the notes to Pan in A Minor and the Cafe went silent, even the players on stage stopped. Paul gave a performance of his lifetime to a song he recorded several years ago. It was fantastic and the audience showered him with applause long after he was out the door.
Before Paul musicians like Dean Williams, Ryan Romany, Arthur Marcial, Joshua Salcedo, Samuel Jack and Roger Salloum had the Cafe going. Juliet Robin joined them providing vocals on What’s Going On, Bahia Girl and Sugar Bum Bum.
Guitarist Marva Newton made a guest appearance and sang Walking in the Dark, a song dedicated to Samuel “Brigo” Abraham who died the same day with Voisin.
Kerwin Trotman had the entire audience singing High Mas with him before he made way for pannist Salcedo who began with Fantasy. The group on stage was joined by bassist Douglas “Dougie” Redon and for Rainorama.
Just when you felt that the end was near SuperBlue walked in and got into Soca Baptist. Of course, he could not do just one so he closed off with a jazzy version of Ethel.
Adrian Philbert thanked all for the support before he did Sparrow’s Memories adding Voisin and Brigo’s name to the lyrics. Once again, as the music was rapping up another veteran walked in –it was a smiling Michael Boothman.
He immediately picked up a bass guitar and joined Rodney Harris, Neil Payne and Marcial, Salloum and Philbert and together they did Fly me to the Moon.
This brought the evening to a close leaving people to just hang around in the Cafe for drinks.
Voisin must have been smiling to see the turnout of musicians.
The exhaustive list of musicians and music lovers included Samuel Jack, Michael “Ming” Low Chew Tung, Ken “Professor” Philmore, Roger Boothman, Kenneth Clarke, Peter Cipriani, Earl Biter Edwards, Lance Nichols, Vonrick Maynard and Ian Henderson.
Supporters included Ingrid Lashley, Barbara Johnson and her sisters, Nigel Campbell, Josanne Leonard, Omata Gamba, Byron Serrette, Gary Inniss, Brendon Gibbs, Michael Neverson, Jackie Taylor, Dexter Dempster, Beverley Smart, Timmy Mora and others.
