Cops, Mayor strike deal to keep Sando mall

The police have vowed to cooperate fully with Mayor Ian Atherly to create a pedestrian mall in the city’s main thoroughfare, after a meeting yesterday with the mayor to discuss the removal of  signs on Monday, which reverted High Street back to normal traffic. Sgt Krishna Maharaj of the San Fernando Police Station said the “entire situation” could have been avoided had the proper communication procedures been put in place.

He declined to elaborate but told Newsday that from this morning, traffic police will return to High Street and erect the barriers and signs they removed on Monday. The police action on Monday, in which they removed traffic signs on High Street, brought an abrupt end to Atherly’s experimentation of a pedestrian-only High Street.
