Parents talk to your children about sex
THE EDITOR: I recently had a conversation with some women about the issue that is facing us today in society. One of the topics was sex and teenage pregnancy. We were looking at how it could be prevented. This brought up an interesting fact. Fact is that most parents don’t talk to their children about sex. Just the word “sex” gives them a scare. Some said their teenage daughters/sons are too young. I think that it is time that parents came to face the reality that there is sex all around us and they need to talk to their children.
I know of girls who are ten years old who are having sex and some of these girls even become pregnant at such a tender age. Sex is not a dirty word, it is only dirty when it is used out of context, for instance out of marriage. It is time we as parents start talking and constantly affirming the issue of sex and the dangers and traumas that follows. Parents are the most powerful influence in their children’s life and if we don’t talk, they will not hear. Parents can be more powerful than they think. Things can only happen if we allow it to. Become friends with your children, become their counsellor, don’t let anyone else do it for you because it may not be the right counsel.
